The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, along with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), was adopted by world leaders in 2015. This comprehensive framework serves as a roadmap for progress that is sustainable and inclusive, leaving no one behind. While each of the 17 goals holds its own significance, SDG 5 places a particular focus on achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. However, it is important to recognize that gender equality is not just limited to one goal, but rather it is integral to the success of all the SDGs.
By ensuring the rights of women and girls across all the goals, we can work towards achieving justice and inclusion, creating economies that work for all, and sustaining our shared environment for present and future generations. SDG 5, which centers on gender equality, encompasses nine targets that aim to address various aspects of discrimination and empower women. These targets include ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls, eliminating violence and harmful practices such as trafficking, sexual exploitation, and forced marriage, ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health, and promoting equal opportunities for leadership and participation.
