UN Secretary-General Condemns the Killing of Tunisian Peacekeeper

Statement from the UN Secretary-General

In a recent statement issued by the spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, strong condemnation has been expressed regarding the tragic killing of a Tunisian peacekeeper. This incident occurred during the night of 11 February, when an unidentified armed individual attacked peacekeepers of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) near the village of Zobassinda on the Ndele-Akursoubak axis. The peacekeepers were engaged in a long-range patrol intended to protect civilians in the Bamingui-Bangoran prefecture.

Condolences and Calls for Justice

The Secretary-General extended his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this loss, as well as to the government and citizens of Tunisia. Such incidents are deeply distressing, and the Secretary-General has emphasized that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.

Urging Authorities to Act

In his statement, the Secretary-General urged the authorities in the Central African Republic to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this assault. It is essential that those responsible for this tragic event are brought to justice in a timely manner. Through this call to action, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to stand in solidarity with the people and government of the Central African Republic, emphasizing the need for security and peace in the region.
