We Don’t Have Time.

**CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT BUCHAREST 19-20 OCTOBER 2023: A Confluence of Global Minds in Pursuit of Sustainable Solutions**Bucharest played host to the largest regional event addressing the paramount challenge of our era – climate change. Over the course of October 19-20, more than 90 Romanian and international speakers convened at the Climate Change Summit to explore sustainable solutions for the future. The event, held at the National Opera House and 20 connected locations throughout Bucharest, drew the participation of 1,700 attendees, with an additional 827,000 viewers tuning in globally through the live stream on the platform, We Don’t Have Time.

In its second edition, the Climate Change Summit has emerged as a pivotal gathering for innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, business associations, civic society, and government officials. Themes encompassed critical topics such as the future of circular economies, finance, agriculture, wildlife conservation, and local communities.

Maria Ruseva, Deputy President of PRD Group Société Générale, expressed the initiative’s core concept: “The idea behind this initiative was to bring together key players in the sustainability transition, whether from authorities, activists, start-ups, or research centers, to exchange ideas and learn from each other. Everything we do, everything happening around us, from the economy to education, has an impact on the environment but can also be a source of sustainable solutions.”

She added, “Addressing the complex problems related to climate change solutions requires the participation of all stakeholders. We are honored that all these groups were also represented in the second edition of the Climate Change Summit – central and local authorities, civic and business communities, experts, and entrepreneurs. Our future relies on collaboration and determination, and we are pleased to facilitate this dialogue.”

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis emphasized the importance of sectoral and international cooperation, highlighting the crucial role of education in combating climate change. He stated, “Children and young people are deeply concerned about climate change and its impact on their lives, but at the same time, they are eager to participate in addressing it. We must empower them and provide opportunities for engagement in accelerating the green transition, ensuring they have the right skills and tools for this purpose.” His message was delivered by Alexandra-Maria Bucșe, International Advisor – Climate and Sustainability Department.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu stated, “Our country is a member of the Paris Agreement and is strongly committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. We believe that the transformation of the Romanian economy into a green and digital economy is a long-term process that requires a robust national plan supported by all political, economic, and civic forces.”

Climate change is a global challenge with local solutions. During the summit, Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan and Hubert Toma, President of Ilfov County Council, signed a memorandum of understanding on clean air, health, and the future. This milestone was achieved through the creation of the green belt in Bucharest-Ilfov, part of the civil society platform “Empriona Ventro Quintera,” initiated by mountaineer Alex Gavan and Florin Stoican, director of the “Ultima Under Heaven” park. This initiative represents one of the civil society’s proposed solutions to address severe pollution affecting the health of Bucharest residents and surrounding areas.

Among other local topics discussed was Romania’s aim to build a sustainable energy ecosystem. Minister of Energy Sebastian Boduia announced a significant investment budget of 18 billion euros, the largest available to any ministry in Romania, directed towards new projects, investments, and the private sector. He also projected an increase in consumers in Romania to 236,000 in the next two years, exceeding 350,000 by 2030.

The first day’s agenda covered climate actions, circular economy, nature-focused projects, sustainability in textile and food industries, agriculture, and urban planning. Ingmar Jurgens, an expert in climate economics and sustainable finance, explained how the economy can become sustainable and concluded with an optimistic message: “We need collaboration, agility, and support. We need collaboration because we must learn from each other, we need agility to focus efforts, experiment, make mistakes, and work together. At the end of the day, we need to convince everyone to have the same goal. We need knowledge and the ability to build an ecosystem that works in the new reality.”

Elena Bardram, Director of Adaptation, Climate Resilience, and Civil Society Relations at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action, discussed the role and future of the Directorate. She emphasized the importance of the three forces applicable to policymakers and ordinary citizens alike. In an era of misinformation and defeatism, survival depends on collaboration, courage, and compassion for those less prepared in Europe and our global partners, whom we must help move forward.

Georgia Elliott Smith, Sustainability Consultant, environmental activist, and public speaker, delved into the true meaning of sustainability and its collective responsibility. She stated, “First and foremost, we have a problem in how we define the term ‘sustainability’ because it has become more than just a means to say ‘environmental management.’ But that is not what it’s about. Sustainability is actually how you can support successful businesses in the long term. This means you have to consider environmental issues, but it’s not limited to that.”

Ed Gillespie, futurist, author, inspirational speaker, and co-founder of the organization Futerra, discussed the future of climate work and emphasized the real question posed by the future: “To what extent will we allow the Earth to become hot?  And we know the consequences that may result from our failure to act: with rising temperatures, weather events become more violent, and with the Earth’s heat rising, we become more violent. I don’t think it’s about saving our planet. The planet doesn’t need saving or changing. We must love and appreciate it for all the wonders it offers us. So, it’s about our collective potential, the future of our children, our stability, and our freedom.

On the second day of the Climate Change Summit, which included 20 events at various locations across the city, discussions revolved around green startups, climate resilience, climate change and artificial intelligence, energy transition, sustainable agriculture practices, food security, sustainable finance, the role of central and local authorities in achieving the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 6, sustainable entrepreneurship, circular economy opportunities, environmental policies, research and development of energy technologies, as well as literature, storytelling, and engaging youth in climate action.
